Sunday Morning Quote — 12/29/13

“A happy life is just a string of happy moments. But most people don’t allow the happy moment, because they’re so busy trying to get a happy life.”

Here’s Hoping

Hi.  Neal and Santa here.

We’re hoping that your Christmas Day 2013 has been a joyous one filled with all things you consider good, especially LOVE.

A Savannah Pre-Christmas-ing

If you’ve been checking out my blog at all lately (and I know at least four of you have–admit it), you may have seen that I have really–I mean REALLY–been enjoying the Christmas season 2013 in my gorgeous hometown of Savannah, GA.

A few more joyful Yule Happenings:

1.  Christmas Cabaret

Last Saturday evening about six pm found me at the backstage door of the beautiful Lucas Theatre …

HawdJEAo6PkAZUnp.jpg

… here in Savannah.  I had tickets for On Stage at the Lucas’ presentation of Christmas Cabaret: A Roger Moss Christmas.  Well, Roger is a buddy of mine who used to live in the apartment above me on Abercorn.  (I’ve overheard him practice his scales many a Sunday afternoon.  Actually he has lulled me to sleep with scales practice.)  But he didn’t lull me to sleep this night!  What a delightful evening of music and fun.  Featured singers Cat Yates (another buddy), Trae Gurley and Natasha Drena regaled the 100 member sold-out audience with Christmas favorites and joyful bantering.  (Am I sounding a little 1900’s-ish?)

But I’m getting ahead of myself.  Upon arriving and venturing inside, I saw Kevin Pittman and Savannah (the fox).  How cool are they?

How cool are WE?

And, look!  Snow!

After the show, me rushing up to the stage area and shamelessly simply OWNING the space and harassing the stars, all in the name of a blog:

I have decided that I really must become a Broadway star.  I owe it to all of you.  That’s just all there is to it.

I can see it now.  Next year:  Christmas Cabaret: A Neal Saye Christmas.  Do you think I could learn to sing or dance or tell jokes or look cool (or get rid of my HORRIBLE FEAR of falling off the stage) by next Christmas?

2.  Gingerbread Village at the Westin

I LOVE this annual Christmas display at the Westin across the Savannah River.  So, umbrella-ed, Robert, Pang and I went last rainy night.  Here’s a bit of what we saw:

3.  Christmas Puppy

Grandsons Daniel (6) and Gabriel (3) received an early Christmas present last night .. a new puppy!  His name is Spyro (after the Skylanders game).

And Yours Truly.  (I’m seriously considering stealing the puppy.  But am having difficulty working that out morally.  Should I simply forget morals this time?  My grandsons are young–they’ll forget soon.)

4.  Yet one more post about my Wreathing in Joy

Christmas wreaths make me So Happy.  I’m not sure why.  But here are a few more I’ve seen in the last few days.

Sunday Morning Quote–12/22/13–“Make Us Channels and Instruments”

Duck3

This week has been a tough one, as far as Hateful Comments Gone Viral (via the Internet and social media) are concerned.  Head Duck Phil Robertson’s diatribe about gays and blacks made headlines (weblines?) worldwide, and just this morning PR (ironically enough) executive Justine Sacco of media company IAC shooed the ducks from the spotlight for a moment with her odious tweet about AIDS and Africa.  If that weren’t enough, the voice of the United Methodist Church spoke clearly this week when it defrocked (what an ugly-sounding word) UM Minister, the Rev. Frank Schaefer, who officiated at his son’s marriage … to another man.  (He refused to change his position on gay marriage.)

Our individual mouths, as well as our institutional ones, and the words sputtering forth from them, can produce such joy one moment and such misery the next.  I certainly know that bridling my tongue is one of my greatest challenges.

Here’s my Sunday Morning Quote:

“Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.”    Ephesians 4:29

I love Assisi’s ancient Prayer for Peace:

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

–St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226)

Let us set intentions this season to speak that which brings forth love and joy!  And let’s encourage our institutions to do the same.

My Saturday Evening Post: Kid Christmas

As you may know, I LOVE the Kid President.  I encourage you to watch the video below.  It addresses the true meaning of Christmas.

Let’s GIVE this holiday season.

A Celtic Christmasing

Celt1

A few nights ago, I (along with six friends) hightailed it over to River Street here in Savannah to Kevin Barry’s Pub for their annual Celtic Christmas Concert.  (I stumbled upon the concert by accident in 2012 and simply HAD to return this year.)

The trio of performers included the talented Harry O’Donoghue, Michael Murray and Carroll Brown.
