Five Friday Happy Bringers (8/31/12) — Saturday Edition aka My Saturday Evening Post

It’s Saturday, of course, not Friday, but it’s still time to be happy.  Here are five of my reasons.

1. Lunch at SoHo (on Liberty in Savannah) with my former GSU student Steve Nyberg, who is now working on his Masters in Film and Television here at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design).

2.  Roaring with Laughter.

3.  Making my mama’s off-the-vine and stalk summer tomato and okra stew.  Probably my all-time favorite summer dish.

4.  On a Friday night whim, taking the water ferry from River Street across the Savannah River to Hutchinson Island and The Westin … because I remembered that it was fireworks night!  Arriving at the Westin dock, I discovered at river’s edge a large gathering of friendly, energetic folks sitting around fancy white tables listening to a loud band.  Well, the band members took a break about the time that 1) I arrived and 2) the fireworks started, so since it was 1) dark and 2) I was sporting a cool white Lacoste and spiked-up messy hair and 3) the fireworks were in full operation, I thought that maybe I could get away with hopping onstage and pretending to be the next act.  (One time somebody told me I looked a little like Mick Jagger.  Before the advanced age and drug use.  His, not mine.)

Here’s the stage:

And look, here I am onstage, giving a shout-out to the fans, who were frantically cheering me on, and asking if they would rather hear “Folsom Prison Blues” or “Mama Mia.”

And, well, gosh, here I am sitting at one of the white tables after the lead singer saw me up on stage and loudly asked me, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”  I suppose that 1) he and his posse only do loud and 2) he doesn’t like ABBA.

A beautiful fire was roaring nearby.

I moved closer to the fireworks …

… and celebrated with Savannah.

5.  Long holiday weekends.

Have a fun-filled Labor Day weekend!
