“Read”

The other day Robert and I drove over to the Islands Library on Whitemarsh Island near us here in Savannah to pick up a book I wanted that wasn’t available at the library closest to us. (TMI?)

Entering the little library, we immediately saw a colorful display about the recent Banned Books Week.

HR trying to look all serious.

A quick Google search and AI explained to me that the theme of Banned Books Week was “Censorship Is So 1984. Read for Your Rights,” inspired by George Orwell’s novel and a call to action against censorship.

Robert and I plan to read through the top 10 most challenged books of 2024 …

I urge you too to …

  1. The girls and I went to Barnes & Noble on Saturday of Banned Books Week and were disappointed that we had to actually ASK where the banned books display was. Turns out, they are no longer “allowed” to call them banned books. There are two mid-sized tables called “Historical Fiction” and “Must Read Fiction” but not referred to as ‘banned books’. At any rate, each of us bought one banned book and read them the following week. My choice was “The Kite Runner”. I’ve taken a screenshot of those 10 most ‘challenged’ books and plan to read them ALL! Thanks, Neal!

      1. P.S. The straw that broke the camel’s back for me was when a student who had barely shown up for class all semester and who had missed several assignments came up to me a few days before finals and said, “I can’t fail this course, so what can I do to pull my grade up?”
