Thursday Doors: “Sabbath Doors” 5/7/26

Last week Robert and I spent a few days up in Atlanta and stayed at an Airbnb in a lovely old house facing our favorite park in the city, Piedmont Park.

I was fascinated by the beautiful refrigerator.

It is a Haier brand frig, and fascinating (at least to me), it has modes for sabbath observation for Jewish guests!

“During the Sabbath or Shabbat, and religious holidays in Judaism, there may be restrictions on certain activities that can extend to the use of appliances. Restrictions may include turning appliances on or off, using control panels or activating lights and sounds.

Sabbath Mode enables the operation of household appliances in compliance with certain Jewish laws. When appliances are put into Sabbath Mode, certain features may be modified or disabled to accommodate these religious practices.” whirlpool.com

What Sabbath Mode Disables

  • Interior Lights: Doors can be opened without turning on lights.
  • Ice/Water Dispenser: Deactivates the dispenser.
  • Temperature Displays: Turns off digital panels.
  • Alarms/Sounds: Disables door-open alarms.

What interesting doors.

Thursday Doors: “Not the Main Door” 4/23/26

On a recent spring morning walk here in Savannah, my eye kept going to doors that were not the main door to a house or dwelling.

Like this one, which sort of looks like a garage door, but on closer inspection (i.e. spying through the cracks), I saw that this rooster door led to a small courtyard.

Can you see how the door opens to the left of #5?

A bit farther down the alley where I was walking, I came upon this vine-topped garage door.

And I love chancing upon iron gates, which are often doors leading to beauty.

Jasmine is sprouting up all over Savannah.

Look at the morning light spilling through the black iron!

And looking through another gate, spring charm exploded.

I hope you walk through some doors into beauty on this Thursday.

Thursday Doors: “Habitat” 4/9/26

I love this quirky corner coffee shop that Robert and I stumbled upon on our trip to Philadelphia last December. (WHO visits frigid Philly in DECEMBER?!)

Walking through the skinny black door, we discovered that the baristas were as quirky as the architecture.

Baristas Toboggan Hat, Milts Hat and Green Hat behind us.

After thawing out a bit with a steaming joe …

… I warmed up conversationally and asked the baristas about the story behind the coffee shop’s name.

The three looked at each other, then at me. Toboggan Hat became the storyteller.

“A long time ago, in the early days of old Philly, this neighborhood was overrun with English tea houses. They were at every corner! You couldn’t swing a stick without knocking over a cup of Earl Grey.”

“Hmm,” I thought.

“One day an ancient bearded man, feared by children for his gruff demeanor, maybe his name was Old Joe, came sauntering down Spruce Street to this very spot, and to nobody but the cold wind, yelled, ’I’mma sick o’ tea. Ha-bat-it some damn coffee!’”

“And right here, RIGHT HERE!, the cold but kind wind morphed the decrepit corner into a coffee shop and named it Habatit Coffee, which over the decades finally became Habitat Coffee.”

“Hmm,” I thought again.

I stared at the loquacious barista.

Toboggan Hat stared back at me.

Milts Hat and Green Hat stared at Toboggan Hat.

Robert stared at, well I couldn’t tell because of his sunglasses.

Then Green Hat said, “You’re making that up, dude.”

“Yes I am,” he replied with a laugh.

“I think you should keep it as your official origin story.” I suggested.

“Naw,” Toboggan replied, “I like to make up a different one whenever anybody asks.”

We left Habitat, doubly satisfied. And walked back into the arctic but lively wind.

Thursday Doors: My First Post

Today I’m joining in on the hoopla about doors on Thursday.

Robert and I are spending a couple of days in Macon Georgia. Walking to dinner in the historic district this evening, we came across these doors, all decorated for Macon’s upcoming Cherry Blossom Festival.

Hello, Thursday Doors!
