“I (Still) Have A Dream.”

One of my favorite Savannah squares (we have 22 in all) here in my Historic District neighborhood is Greene Square, just a few minutes walk from our place.

See the building behind the lamp post and the centuries-old live oak tree?

It’s the Second African Baptist Church, founded in 1802.

And one of my favorite places to sit and read is that little wooden bench in the lower right hand corner of the photo above. See it?

Here I am sitting and reading a couple of nights ago.

Oh, if buildings could talk!

But wait, they can!

Listen …

AMERICAN HERO MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. FIRST PREACHED HIS ICONIC “I HAVE A DREAM” SPEECH RIGHT HERE.

May we continue to have and share his dream.

Five Friday Happy Bringers 9/1/23

My weekly gratitude journal, of sorts.

1. HR’s homemade version of the Egg McMuffin. Really good!

(Should I make him apply for a job at McDonald’s?)

2. Surviving Idalia here in my Savannah.

But nothing too bad where we are near the river. Thanksgiving!

3. This article about trees in Atlanta. PLEASE READ IT. It’s so much more than just about trees.

Here’s the link:

4. My (and your) ability to make decisions. To weigh pros and cons.

5. The Joy of Friday. Maybe it’s because I am a retired educator, but every Friday morning brings me a bit of unfiltered joy, the beginning of the weekend!

May this Friday introduce a joyous weekend ahead for you.

Monday Moaning or Monday Marveling? 8/28/23 “Taylor Square”

Marveling. Marveling. Marveling.

My beautiful small southern city of Savannah has twenty-two extant squares, each unique, in our Historic District.

Robert and I live just off the northeastern-most one, Washington Square, close to the river.

But this morning is about the Square formally known as Calhoun Square.

Here’s the link to the article in case you are interested. (It made the national news.)

Oh, and just so you know, the previous name of the square? Calhoun Square, named after John C. Calhoun, a former vice president of the United States, who owned slaves and vigorously defended the institution of slavery.

“What he stood for is not what Savannah stands for,” Savannah mayor Van Johnson said.

Way to go, Savannah!

And Congratulations to Susie King Taylor!

HR in Taylor Square this morning. The old name markers have been removed, but the new ones are not up yet. Soon!

T-Shirt Tuesday: “Savannah Wildlife T-Shirt Series” #8

Recently, when Robert and I drove over to the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, I fell in love with a series of very cool T-shirts featuring area animals and what we can learn from them. So I decided to feature one on each T-shirt Tuesday for a while.

Today, the Beautiful Bluebird.

May we join the bluebird in trying to keep a song in our hearts this Tuesday.

Even if it gets turned around sometime.

5. Reading a new book about one of my anxiety issues …

May you breathe easily into a terrific weekend ahead.

Monday Moaning or Monday Marveling? 7/7/23 “A Tomato Standout”

Definitely Marveling this morning!

So the other day, HR and I were spending far more time than is socially acceptable walking around and looking at all the fresh veggies and fruits at our favorite local market, Davis Produce, near us here in Savannah on the way out to the ocean.

When all of a sudden, I saw her …

An incredible beauty of a tomato.

A work of natural art.

Striped glory.

So of course, I rescued her from retail and brought her home.

What a Standout she is among her brothers and sisters!

My weekly gratitude journal, of sorts.

1. Summer Salads just keep on coming.

2. An HR-planned date night.

We went down to Plant Riverside, had dinner, watched the ships and enjoyed a terrific jazz concert.

3. Being thankful for a new chiropractor who is helping me with my lower back and arthritis issues. I walked out of his office yesterday morning with NO PAIN for the rest of the day.

4. Laughing at the craziness of both Halloween and Thanksgiving already making an appearance. And in this summer heat!

Kroger near us

5. Tomato sandwiches!

I hope you have much to be “thanksgiving for” this weekend!

Recently, when Robert and I drove over to the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, I fell in love with a series of very cool T-shirts featuring area animals and what we can learn from them. So I decided to feature one on each T-shirt Tuesday for a while.

Today, the Delightfully Dazzling Dragonfly.

Up close and personal with a friendly dragonfly down in Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp south of us …

And coincidentally, yesterday Donna sent me a photo of a dragonfly she spotted on her car’s antenna …

With the dragonfly, may we appreciate this long summer day.
